Instagram is embracing the “photo dump” trend.
Instagram is allowing users to add up to 20 photos or videos to their feed carousels, as the platform embraces the trend of “photo dumps.”In 2017, Instagram added the ability to post up to 10 photos or videos in one swipeable carousel post. Now, you can post double the amount of content.
Getting that one ideal photo to post to Instagram was the main focus of the app when it first gained popularity. The concept of “photo dumps” became well-known as time went on because people began sharing a carousel of images and videos rather than worrying about choosing just one.
Instagram is welcoming photo dumps just in time for the end of summer by doubling the amount of images and videos you can post in a carousel. When Facebook first became popular, you could upload an entire photo album with pictures from your summer vacation. That’s what this update reminds us of.
It’s important to note that the modification moves Instagram closer to TikTok’s carousel function, which allows users to upload up to 35 images in a post.
Instagram continues to diverge from the straightforward photo-sharing app it was ten years ago, so while some users might be thrilled about the update, others might think it’s excessive.
A user’s post may contain more than ten slides; not everyone will be interested in reading through them, especially since the app is already overflowing with other content formats like reels, stories, and notes.
Given that Instagram was seen testing the increased limit back in March, the announcement of the limit extension is not shocking.
Thursday’s revelation comes a day after Instagram said that it’s making “Views” the key measure across all of its formats, including reels, live, photographs, carousels, and stories. The shift means that artists will be able to track the same metric across all of their content.
